Should anyone really be surprised that Pete Carroll got a team with a losing record in the playoffs?

It just occurred to me that Pete managed to have a USC team named co-champions in a year that they didn't even play in the BCS championship game so why should anyone be surprised that he has a team with a losing record in the playoffs. I guess both of these events were within the rules of their respective leagues but it the same time they both just feel somehow wrong.
