What's with the smear campaign?

Do we have to deal with this every four years? All this bickering and name calling, it happens every election. We as Americans never fail to get caught up with all this BS. Instead of understanding the issues, we care more about smear campaign. This is getting old. Don't we deserve better than this? I guess whoever wins this election, we deserve it.
