Whats wrong with my car when the speedo and taco drop out?

I have a holden vectra 98 model. My taco and speedo drop out (more often than not). My mechanic says that its probably bad wiring. Something to do with the fact its European. ???? He says that he may have to take the dash out. How much with this cost approx?
